Eligibility for membership in the Order of the Gown is evaluated during the period of time after final grades are reported and before the subsequent convocation at which new members are inducted. Eligibility is determined by overall earned semester hours and the GPA for the previous two semesters of enrollment at Sewanee. While transferred grades are not included in the GPA for eligibility purposes, approved transfer coursework (including AP/IB credit) does count as earned semester hours, and will affect a student's classification for Order of the Gown. For instance, if a student has earned 28 semester hours at Sewanee at the end of an Advent/Easter academic year, and the student completes four hours of credit off campus during the following summer, those four hours will bring the student to sophomore standing for the upcoming Advent semester. The student will then be eligible for Order of the Gown consideration as a sophomore during the subsequent semester. Students should send the final transcripts of any completed transfer work to the Office of the University Registrar as early as possible, so that these hours may be awarded in a timely manner.

Similarly, summer coursework completed at Sewanee or on a Sewanee program counts toward a student's classification, which is used to determine eligibility, but the GPA from Sewanee summer courses is not considered for Order of the Gown eligibility.
